IBM Squeeze Out More Performance Than HP!
Principled Technologies have undertaken some hardware benchmarking to compare the new(ish) IBM x3850 M2 with an HP ProLiant DL580 G5.
The IBM machine comes out on top with 27% better performance per watt and 8% more performance
from the vConsolidate tool.

This is not a good comparison from an industry perspective. The HP DL585 is the better performing HP server for virtualization, and is considered the better choice in most circumstances. This report appears to have cherry-picked a server model that would look poor against the IBM offering.

I disagree that it is not a fair comparison. The DL580 G5 is HP’s flagship 4 socket Quad Core Intel server as is the x3850 M2.
They both support up to 256GB RAM and have a similar price to the end-user (okay the IBM is more pricey, but they always are!)
The DL585, whilst a very capable machine is not a direct comparison to the x3850M2 this would more likely be the x3755 which is an 4 socket AMD box.
I have absolutely no bias one way or the other, but I do appreciate when a vendor comes out with a superior piece of kit comes along. I know it’s only a matter of time before a similar report comes along that points out where the HP is better!
Besides which I thought that it was an interesting article figured others would too.
I’d be happy to hear why HP or Fujitsu or any other vendor is better so please point out why in replies.
