Ubuntu JeOS

Ubuntu have announced a new version of their Operating System that has been specifically designed for deployment as a virtual machine.

They have cut out large swathes of the additional packages such as:

  • MySQL
  • Cups
  • postfix
  • slapd
  • evms
  • mutt

The main focus for this release will be as a Virtual Appliance base operating system, so will primarily be aimed at ISVs. However, there is an obvious advantage of being able to run this OS as the de-facto standard in Linux OS deployment. Smaller OS means less resources being used up by applications that are not needed.

Hopefully, JeOS (pronounced Juice) will get a general release alongside their existing portfolio.
